Stress Awareness Month | How to Fix Adrenal Fatigue

Do you feel tired, yet wired?  Do have trouble falling asleep at night or have trouble sleeping through the night?  Are you putting on pounds around that dreaded abdominal area?  Are you a mom who runs around feeling overwhelmed on most days?  If you answered yes to any of these, join the crowd and by the way, welcome to the Adrenal Fatigue Club.

Most of us understand the connection between chronic stress and cortisol.  Long term, emotional stress increases cortisol levels and generally wreaks havoc on our neuroendocrine and immune systems, making weight loss virtually impossible.  In fact, elevated cortisol triggers inflammation at the cellular level, and guess what?  Inflammation at the cellular level is where all of the nine degenerative disease processes begin.  Strike 1.

Over time, elevated cortisol compromises our thyroid functioning and hormonal balance.  This can make any perimenopausal woman feel like she is losing her mind while sitting in a heated oven.  Chronically elevated cortisol triggers thyroid dysfunction, which is also an underlying cause of panic disorder, anxiety, and depression (for which people are often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated with psychiatric meds).  Strikes 2, 3, and 4. Like It. Love It. Reebok™ Crossfit.

I love this Reebok™ Crossfit commercial.  Every time it comes on, I have a strange yearning for power cleans, wall balls, muscle ups, and burpees.  Only 11 hours to go……

That’s all from Boca Raton today, folks.  This just in:  that little tooth that broke my heart twice fell out at school today.  During line time while doing calendar.  I will miss that little tooth.  Ta-ta for now!

My Workout With Tae Bo Legend, Billy Blanks

Last Saturday was the best Saturday ever in the history of Saturdays.  The perfection started with the weather that morning, which was surprisingly fantastic.  It was one of those cloudless, brilliant blue sky days that appeared after the forecast had predicted clouds and rain.  Funny how that happens around here.

I had invited a few friends to join me at LifeTime Fitness in Boca Raton for a special event with the Tae Bo legend himself, Billy Blanks.  He is soon releasing a new Tae Bo DVD series, and LifeTime Fitness partnered with him to promote the program.

I Caught the Crossfit Fever

I have exciting news to share with you, my closest internet friends.  I caught the Crossfit fever.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try Crossfit Hardcore in east Boca Raton with a group of friends.  I have heard about Crossfit, and I have seen the hardbodied people who work out there.  They are obviously doing something really right.  I also hoped that it might be a new fitness outlet for me.  Running is my drug of choice, and I like mixing it up with kettlebells and P90X.  Weight training, however, is not my cup of tea.  I always feel nauseous and drained for the rest of the day, so I generally avoid the typical “weight training” style workout.

The Dirty Dozen Fish | 12 Fish You Should Avoid

You’ve probably heard of the “dirty dozen,” or those fruits and vegetables that you should always buy organic.  These are the produce items that tend to absorb more pesticide and toxins than other fruits, so you should always buy these items from the organic section.  Did you know that there are also about a dozen seafood items you should avoid eating? The Key to Your Health and Happiness

Here is a repost of one of my all time favorite articles on a topic that I continue to think is the most important thing anyone can do on a daily basis to improve health…..exercise. Exercise is the single most important thing I do on a daily basis to live well.  It’s worth reposting and revisiting this topic every now and then, so here you go!

If I could give you a magic pill that would make you smart, thin, happier, focused, motivated, energetic, and optimistic, would you accept my gift?  If it were free, would you say yes quickly?  If it worked day by day, would you turn me down?  That magic pill does exist, and it’s free without side effects.

Healthy Living for Moms with Michelle Diaz

Personal trainers are everywhere, but there are few that really inspire me. Very few.  In fact, there are some trainers who appear to need a personal trainer themselves…..but there is one personal trainer that inspires me.

Meet Michelle Diaz, an elite fitness trainer at BB3 Training Center in Weston, FL.  She walks the walk, talks the talk, and helps women and moms like us get it right.  Even more importantly, she inspires other to stay the course (the hardest part, right?). [Read more...]

Top 10 Tips for Losing Pregnancy Weight

Losing weight after pregnancy or miscarriage can be extremely tough.  In my own experience, losing weight after miscarriage has been much harder than it was after pregnancy.  No matter what I did, how consistent I was, or how hard I tried, I could not lose the last 6 pounds after miscarriage. I’ve come to the conclusion that this has a lot to do with excess estrogen.

Your liver is responsible for metabolizing estrogen, and it can’t do this job it’s busy getting rid of other crap we put into our bodies.  Therefore, the excess estrogen in your system after pregnancy or miscarriage continues to float around and make fat loss virtually impossible. Once I made a few simple, yet powerful adjustments to my lifestyle, the weight finally came off.  These changes had nothing to do with exercise or caloric deficit and everything to do with helping my body do some estrogen detox.

Here are a few less well known tips for losing weight after miscarriage  and pregnancy that can help lower your estrogen levels and make your efforts more effective.

Halloween Sugar and Spirits: Is Alcohol Abuse a Sugar Addiction?

We all know a few moms who like to have a drink or maybe five.  There’s nothing wrong with having a drink now and then, or even one a day, but few people know the real reason they are drawn to alcohol.

Most people don’t realize that alcohol is actually a sugar.  In fact, alcohol is the fastest acting sugar on the brain. Within seconds of taking your first sip, those sugars reach your brain.  In short, a “buzz” is actually a sugar high, which is interesting considering the addictive nature of sugar.

The Robochick at My Gym

So I go to this fitness center about 100 miles a few miles from Savanna’s school after I drop her off.  This place is ridiculously far from our house, but I’m willing to make the drive there because it’s super clean and is more of a fitness club than a sweaty gym.  There is no BO smell and very little oggling the eye candy, at least not that I notice.  And it’s in the heart of Boca Raton, so the people there provide some fodder for my blog.

There are several women there who I can’t help but notice, and one of them happens to look a lot like the female version of Arnold Schwarzenneger with breasts and large lips.  Robochick absolutely loves her body, something I know for certainty based on her attire.  She usually wears a lacy black sports bra and workout pants while staying as close as possible to the mirrors so as to admire her own pump and veinage.  I’m not even sure where one would purchase a black, lacy sports bra. I personally sweat so much that I try to buy the cheapest workout clothes possible, but I digress.   [Read more...]
